unniloctium

Temporary name of the chemical element with atomic number 108. It was synthesized and conclusively identified in 1984 by P. Armbruster, G. M�nzenberg and colleagues at the Gesellshaft f�r Schwerionenforschung at Darmstadt, Germany. Its discoverers provisionally named it hassium (symbol, Hs), for the Latin name of the German province Hesse, but a committee of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) changed the name to hahnium, which had previously been used for element 105.

In 1997, the IUPAC Commission on Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry endorsed the name hassium.²
